Trondheim is European Volunteering Capital (EVC 2023)
What does that mean for you?
On December 10, 2023, Mayor Rita Ottervik takes over the baton as the European Volunteering Capital from Gdansk in Poland (EVC 2022).
The goal for Trondheim as EVC 2023 is to motivate, inspire and encourage other municipalities, regionally, nationally and internationally, to promote and celebrate volunteering. We want to make not only volunteers aware of how important their efforts are, but everyone has to understand the importance of volunteering for making a good and safe city to live and thrive in.
The opening ceremony in Nidarosdomen
On 31 January, Trondheim municipality organizes an opening ceremony in Nidaros Cathedral during which the 2022 Volunteering Award will be handed out. With music and dance from Schola Sanctæ Sunnivæ, Svartlamon Hardkor, Musikalfabrikken, Cissi Klein VGS and Øyvind Weiseth, we will thank and pay tribute to our volunteers.
Volunteering forum and international knowledge exchange
50 international guests from more than 15 European countries will also participate in the event. These international guests will discuss and exchange knowledge with local organizations during a study trip organized in advance of the festival performance. This study trip is also the start of a series of volunteering forums that the municipality realizes in collaboration with NTNU in 2023.
Every month we will organize a meeting around a relevant topic, which could be, for example, poverty and social inequality; diversity and inclusion of immigrants and refugees; (social) sustainability in crisis volunteering; recruitment of new volunteers and professionalization of voluntary organizations. Volunteering forums will include knowledge- and experience-based lectures from various actors. The lectures will be streamed so that voluntary organizations in Trøndelag can participate without having to travel. Current dates will be posted in the beginning of 2023 in the calendar on this website.
In order to strengthen cooperation at the European level, Trondheim municipality, in cooperation with Trøndelag’s European office , will host the next CEV European Volunteering Congress in Brussels in March 2021.
Awareness-raising and recruitment
Recruiting new volunteers is an important issue that we will be focusing on in 2023. After the Covid-19 pandemic, several organizations are experiencing that volunteers have not returned and that it is more difficult to recruit new ones.
We will use 2023 to make everyone in Trondheim aware that voluntary efforts are essential for the life in our city. Without volunteers, there would be no children’s sports, no neighborhood event or cleaning of the beaches and forests. An awareness-raising film that will be shown in all cinemas in Trondheim and Stjørdal in the spring and autumn of 2023 will help to convince the citizens of Trondheim about the importance of volunteering.
Finn Fram Fest, 16th of April 2023 in Trondheim Spektrum, will be expanded with 30 voluntary organizations to inspire more people to get involved. During this event children and young adults can come and see, try and discover new leisure activities or find something to get involved in.
We stick together!
Together we will make 2023 a special year for volunteering in Trondheim and Trøndelag. Together we will promote and celebrate volunteering.
Together we will ensure that Trondheim will be an even better city to live in and together we will be proud that Trondheim is the European Volunteering Capital 2023 ! We stick together!
